We're excited to welcome Ellen as our new Software Developer at New Icon!
What’s your working background, and how did you come to work for New Icon?
After graduating from Birmingham university with a degree in maths, I started working as a developer at eflow Global. There, I helped create and update financial regulatory software and met Kelly and Harry! After 4 years at eflow, I wanted a change, and Kelly reached out about an opening at New Icon, so here I am.
Describe your job to a six-year-old.
I help make websites! (do 6 years olds know what websites are? I’m not sure)
What are you looking forward to working on the most?
I’m really looking forward to learning different tech stacks and languages. I mainly worked with quite bespoke software at my previous company, so I’m excited to branch out and learn new things!
What excites you most about the future of software?
It will be interesting to see how AI will continue to be incorporated into current software and what opportunities that will create for developers (without taking too many of their jobs I hope).
What tech breakthroughs do you think we’ll be seeing in the next ten years?
Mainly the advancement of AI and it becoming more and more a part of our daily lives.
What do you like doing outside of work, any unusual hobbies?
Outside of work, I visit Reading quite frequently since my parents and quite a few friends live there. I also like playing video games, swimming, and going to pub quizzes!
Favourite film/TV show/podcast?
Howl’s Moving Castle, The IT Crowd, Off Menu
Do you have any hidden talents, or is there an interesting fact about you?
It’s probably complete luck, but I’ve won every game of shuffleboard I’ve played.
What book should everyone read?
I’m not a massive reader, so my favourite books are the children’s novels I read growing up. I probably wouldn’t recommend them to people now XD
At New Icon we listen to a lot of music and make far too many playlists. What are your go-to songs and/or artists?
Recently, I’ve been into very basic girlie pop like Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter. My favourite Chappell Roan song right now is Naked In Manhattan. I’m also a big rock lover though and like Nothing But Thieves, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and Don Broco.
